Title Defense on the Subject, "Language Research"

In our subject "Language Research", our professor said that we have to conduct a title defense to have our topic for the project. He asked us to prepare five (5) topics to be defended. Actually, this subject is one of the difficult and challenging subjects we have this semester; and sometimes, we have to sacrifice the time for other subjects so we can comply on the requirements on this subject; and because our professor is very strict when it comes to  those.

On the days that I'm preparing my topics, I had the difficulty - as everyone of us is experiencing - but then I remembered that my professor said that our topic can be phenomenal, so I made a title which some are in situational. And here are my prepared topics:

Topic 1: Factors that causes failure of actual teaching of practice teachers.

Topic 2: The Effects of Pronunciation Instruction in learning the English language

Topic 3: Difficulties of elementary students in learning an English language

Topic 4: Learning Cursive Writing: Necessary or Unnecessary

Topic 5: Homogenous Class: Advantages and Disadvantages

On the fist day of the defense, I volunteered to be the third one to defend my topics. At first, I was thinking that my topics were okay and hopefully to also gain a highest score as our professor always states as he can give, and what he gave to the other two who first presented. But I'm not that confident about the having a high grade. I was ready to defend my proposed topics thinking that I will already be finished in this defense, because it's really difficult and pressuring. Then, as I started with my topic one, I have enumerated the details and importance of conducting that topic. When I had finish with the first topic, my professor suddenly said that it was too general, that it may not be connected to the description of our subject (Language Research). Then, I explained that it will focus only on the speaking skills of the practice teachers. So my professor suggested that the title should be changed that it will connect to its focus on to the subject description.

On that moment, I felt somewhat down and upset. Then I still continued with the other topics but my confidence in explaining was somewhat lessened, because I already felt a little sadness in me, that my hope in getting a very good grade was already decreased. After my defense, as I was expecting, I didn't get the highest score our professor can give.

At the end of the day, I'm already reflecting about two things. One is, will I be happy that I became an instrument for my classmates to revise their prepared topics so it will be connected to the subject and they will gain the highest score the professor can really give? Or, I will become very sad and unfortunate for myself  about that opportunity to achieve something very good in this difficult subject but then I failed? Another thing that bothered me after that incident was, will I still have another opportunity to gain what I'm hoping in this subject?

  1. hmmmmmmmmmm

the topic you chose is nearly related also to the subject "Language Research"

kadalasan sa panahon ngayon, marami ang natatakot magsalita or nahihiya.,

maybe your teacher didn't get your point. much better if ipaliwanag mo ng husto sa class

don't lose hope. chances are always there.
even though you got the average grade, accept it with all your hearts.

God bless and continue doing what you have.

  2. Hi! I somewhat agree to your professor. Topic 1 is a bit broad. Factors that can cause failure in actual teaching of practice teacher encompass so many aspects, not just the speaking skills. We can include professional competence, evaluation practices, personal characteristics and interpersonal relationship with students among other things. That's what your professor is trying to tell you. You don't need to change the topic, just the title.

You can just change the title based on your particulars.

    Good luck!

  5. Although I'm not that good when it comes to language and that I'm not taking up education as a course of study, I may say that there is nothing perfect. Even professionally acclaimed individuals commit mistakes. Just as what others commented, what your professor said should not affect your confidence in your self to do better. Mistakes are stepping stones to triumph, you may not have achieved what your heart desired, but I believe you can do better, and you can be best among the rest. BE GOOD. BE BETTER. BE BEST. RISE ABOVE YOURSELF. :)

  11. Your professor is totally correct; the topic is too broad you should not have a second thought regarding that matter. “Language Research”, is differ from the factors that causes failure of actual teaching of practice teachers even we used language in teaching , we cannot conclude that causes of failure among practice teachers is focus only in speaking skills “alone” , it’s all about internal and external factors also. (My comment is too general hope you understand what I mean) and also why you feel unfortunate? Unfortunate for giving your classmates the idea to revise their works so they can also get a high grade? Or unfortunate because you failed to get what you want in the subject? Whatever it is, for me you are very fortunate, you know why? Because you can change your work and you can have a better one in the future. Mistakes is part of our life, treasure your mistakes and you have the opportunity to change it very nice blog
